Splintered Light

29" x 10" x 80" │ Mixed Media │ 2024

Splintered Light is an experimental collage of broken glass shards, marbles, plaster, wood, and wired electrical bulbs. This memorial work was created in honor of my grandmother who had recently passed. She was an artist, a family historian, a caretaker, and a woman loved by many. In choosing my materials, I referenced a story I heard at her wake. When she was younger, she made beautiful pieces of jewelry by cracking marbles with heat and making them into beads. I utilized her story and incorporated the idea of cracking and ephemerality with broken glass shards and marbles covering the statue. As the woman who helped hold our family together, her light will continue to shine in our lives.
